The camera never lies… Or does it !?!?…

Spring

A Tangled Web

It’s that time again… Time for another of my favourite subjects… Sunset…

Nothing much more to say than that… Oh, and that’s my daughter at the top, and oddly enough she wasn’t QUITE so interested in the photography aspect when their was a play area involved !?!?! Go figure !!!…

Don’t Ask

As I have absolutely NO IDEA !!!… But apparently they’re my absolute favourite… lol…

Couldn’t decide on colour or black and white here though… Any preferences ??…

These have GOT to be in colour though… or… have they !!…

Oh, and this one… well… if anyone DOES know what it is, then I’m sure you can claim your prize from your local “Freak of Nature” outlet… View large and prick your senses… ;)

Tickled Pink

Couldn’t resist the… ummmmm… RED  (not pink) tips to these leafy type planted wotsits…

Anyway, I have a question…  Although I tend to favour landscapes and the odd bit of urbex, I’ve always tried to keep my photography as varied as possible, and even lately throw in the odd bit of artwork to boot… But here’s the rub, I look at some blogs where they have a very specific area of expertise / focus, and a very consistent feel to them, and can’t help but feel they look MUCH nicer than mine… More professional and tied together… To me, my blog is just… kinda messy… and really doesn’t hold together too well because of the variety to the things I post…

So what do you think ???… I know a blog is a personal thing, and should definitely reflect the individual, and that variety is a GOOD thing. The downside I guess though is the whole “Jack of all trades, Master of none” scenario….  Anyway, I also prefer things to have a certain flow… and don’t really feel that with my own blog…

I don’t intend to change my blog, as my desire to try all things photographic / artistic is as strong as it ever was, but I’d love to know how other people feel… Do you prefer a more consistent subject matter and feel to a blog, or do you prefer one that tries to throw in a bit of anything and everything ???…

ps… May not be around much next week, as I have a little trip arranged, and depending on wifi access etc, commenting will be sporadic, and posting will likely be non existent… Hopefully though I’ll have some new material when I come back… :)

Just Another Castle…

Oh, and a few birds thrown in for good measure too… as you know we do love our birds… Especially our Ladybirds !!… ;)

Coming Soon…

To a Blog Near You… FLOWERY TYPE STUFF  !!!…

Yeah ok, I realise they’re not exactly the most impressive examples of those smelly things that appear in the garden on occasions throughout the year, but for the benefit of those who may not have realised before, flowers are not really me area of expertise… I’m willing to try anything once though, and I found they went best slightly roasted, with a hint of pepper… :)

This one was hiding in the bushes...

And for those who are wondering exactly what they are, well I have been doing some exhaustive research, and can confirm that they are indeed flowers…. To be more technically correct, and in order of appearance…

1) Golden Redus Wettus…
2) Hidingus Pinkus…
3) Tinyus Wettus Redus…
4) Peachus Pencilshavers Softus…

Grow Your Own

This past week has finally seen the beginnings of spring, with some very nice weather… Even shorts and t-shirt weather for some of us… although it has to be said the evenings are still quite chilly… Yesterday evening though showed signs of being one of those stunning sunsets, and I have to confess to being a sucker for a sunset, but it’s never as much fun, nor does it feel very safe going out alone, near dark, with a bag full of rather expensive camera gear….

It appears though that finally I have a solution to part of that particular problem… I now have myself a “grow your own” shooting buddy… in the way of my eldest daughter… Now she’s always been kinda interested in taking pictures, but has never really had a camera that takes “proper” pictures… She’s only had those real cheap and nasty compacts, that take 5 unrecognisably blurred images before the battery gives out… and hence never really got in to it…

Last weekend though I decided it was time to hand down my spare DSLR, as it was just gathering dust… SO… my grow your own now has her first real camera… And she LOVES it… and can’t wait to go shooting again… I know going out with her won’t BE any safer, but it’s more fun than being on your own… and if the need arises I can always use her as a human shield, or a bargaining tool… :)

This is her btw… capturing the sunset…. Guess now I also need to hand down my spare tripod !!!….

Birds Or Bugs

Well everybody else seems to be doing it, and I have really needed to make better use of mine, so I’ve given in to a spot of MMM… (March Macro Madness), and given a bit of spring weather this weekend I attached said macro, and went in search of all things tiny…

The real question to me though… and I KNOW given the geographical location of majority of my blog buddies that it’s an argument I’ve already lost regardless… BUT, I’m never one to be defeated so easily…. lol… SO….Ladybirds or Ladybugs ???…

I know I’m right though, cos wikipedia says so… lol… to quote… “The name “ladybird” originated in Britain where the insects became known as “Our Lady‘s bird” or the “Lady beetle”.[8][9] Mary (Our Lady) was often depicted wearing a red cloak in early paintings and the spots of the seven spot ladybird (the most common in Europe) were said to symbolise herseven joys and seven sorrows.[8] Common names in other European languages have the same association (the German name Marienkäfer translates to “Marybeetle” or, literally, Mary-chafer).[10] In the United States the name was adapted to “ladybug”.[10]

SEE… LadyBIRD !!… Ladybug was just an adaptation of the correct name… lol… ;)

I WIN !!… especially as I can edit anyones comments, to make sure they agree with me… lol… :p

View large, and tickle him under the chin if you dare… He won’t bite… much… ;)

Mindless Macros

Well it’s very rare that I dust off my macro lens… and even rarer that I ever take pictures of those flowery type things… but in a fit of mindlessness today I actually managed both…

I have absolutely no idea whatsoever what this little blue thing is, other than I know it’s NOT a bluebell… It has somehow found its way in to my garden though, along with the long deceased miniature sunflower that I found hiding in an old pot behind the shed…

Maybe this year I might even contemplate planting some other stuff out there, as they can be pretty cool to photograph…

BTW… By all means click and go large, but be careful not to drown in the droplets… :D

Land Ahoy

It’s been such a very long time since I’ve been anywhere with the camera, and even longer since we’ve had any decent sunsets around here… Tonight though looked as though it had some promise, so I dragged my daughter out with me for a bit of company… plus it was cold and it didn’t seem fair that I was the only one to suffer… lol… (fortunately though she loves coming shooting with me)… And she enjoyed it even more so tonight, as for an extra bonus we stumbled upon this new and deserted playground, that wasn’t there last time we were at this spot… Can’t beat that.. a sunset and a playground… but of course I never tried the slide or swings or see-saw… ;)

The Kissing Gate

I was approached recently by a local pub / restaurant, who expressed an interest in my pictures, and some form of arrangement with me for having some pictures framed and hung on their walls… as art for sale… Well this is one of the first few images they’ve chosen… Can’t wait to see what they look like framed and hung on the walls…

Me Next… MAKEUP !!!…

So, as much as my blog tends to lack much in the way of animals and stuff, this is more to do with me mostly taking the simpler more inanimate options…. and leaving the chasing stuff through fields and forests to the more committed… Plus I find that trying to photograph bears with my 10mm poses one or two minor risks… Not that we have too many wild bears in the UK…  I think my cat scares most of them away… Well it’s either my cat or my rotting banana-skin hat (It’s a classic bear deterrent dontchaknow… and works a treat)… ;)

I DO however love taking pictures of Swans, as we have quite the abundance of them here, and almost anywhere where there’s fresh water, then there’s bound to be a small bucket or two full of swans….

PLUS… You don’t have to do ANY chasing, as they’re so vain, that whenever you arrive with a camera then they’re sure to come pose…. Either that or they’re just plain greedy, and assume my camera bag is full of pickle sandwiches (yeah they like pickles… and marmite)… :)

Maybe I should do a Swan Series… Wodyafink ???

Oh, and as a warning… I have a flower shot… of JUST a flower… that may find its way on here at some point in the future… You have been warned… :)

Summer House

Wouldn’t you just love one like this ??… and unfortunately no, it’s not mine… lol.. Anyways, I had to post this, as we’ve been having a distinct taste of summer over here… Today it has been well up in the 80’s, which is truly unusual for May… but I’m defo not complaining… We just need a few more clouds (for photographic purposes obviously)… ;)

Late to the Party

Yeah I know that I’m extremely late to the dandelion ball..  But hey… it’s not too often you catch me taking photos of flora and fauna… so make the most of it… ;)

Macrophotographanism.. ism..

Yeah ok ok, so I’m struggling with titles again…. but hey… It’s a real word…. It’s in the dictionary… Well it’s in the one I’m just writing at least…It’s under n…. OH… Crap !!…. “N”…. Oh heck, Now I have to start again…..

And before you start Amber… No.. It’s NOT a flower… and it’s most definitely NOT pink either… and it’s most certainly NOT in my garden… ummmmm… Well ok, maybe it was in my garden, but I don’t know how it got there… Maybe the hoverfly brought it with him…. S’not mine though…. Oh no no no….You know you’ll not catch me taking pictures of flowers and stuff…

I was right though…. It’s not a flower… It’s blossom…. and it’s not pink… It’s “Cherry” Blossom…. apparently…. So someone told me…. :)

Bathtime

Fortunately not mine though you’ll be pleased to hear… as I had my bath in February, so I’m good for at least another few months… unless the flies return again in too vast a quantity that is, then I’ll concede to a wipe down with some wet stuff… Anyway, bathtimes are dangerous, especially for me… as I have a tendency to fall asleep in the bath… and that’s when the bath toys are at their most mischievous…  And as for Errol the rubber duck… Well I remember this one time when.. ummm.. Yeah ok, maybe that story can wait methinks…

Back on track again… So this was one of the few shots I got from the interior of Leeds Castle, before I got told off for “appearing too professional”… lol… Next time I think I’ll just take some paper and a few crayons…and plant myself in the middle of the floor and start scribbling…

They were quite happy though to let my daughter snap away with her point and shoot though… Maybe I should have loaned her my camera… Lol…

And as promised, here’s a couple of extra shots of the black swans from the castle grounds…

Sunny Knights

Well it has to be said that one thing we’re blessed with here is an abundance of castles… Within an hours drive from me I can think of at least a dozen, if not more… and I’m sure I’m missing plenty too… And they’re mostly genuine castles too… So today (as the kiddies were off school for the day), a visit to our local’ist local castle was required…

This is Leeds Castle, and was built in 1119, and is most renowned from the Tudor times, when King Henry VIII visited frequently with his Queen Catherine of Aragon, and the entire royal court…

It’s a wonderful place to spend the day though, when the weather is nice… and comes complete with an amazing landscaped estate, and the compulsory moat, black swans, and a maze, and of course its own golf course… lol..

Skinny-Dipping…

NO !!!… Not ME !!… I’m referring to the tree fortunately… This is yet another one of those favoured places very close to me, that I keep coming back to, as personally I think it’s just such a photogenic little tree, sitting there all alone in the middle of its own little pond…

This is yet another post though where I just could not decide between two specific shots, so once again I will post both and you can take your pick… At the moment though I’m edging towards the bigger sky option…. but then I have been known to be quite fickle at times, and will likely dislike both of them by the time anyone gets to read this… I also have a shot from the other side of the pond that I currently really like, that will appear in a future post (assuming I don’t dislike that one too real soon)… lol…

Seriously though… Is it JUST me, or does anyone else take a series of shots, feel real happy with them… but within a few days dislike ALL of them ?!?!?…

Health Warning…

Yeah I’m sorry, but I thought I’d better issue the relevant health and safety precautions with this one… It’s not pretty, and certainly not for the faint of heart… And I don’t want anyone suing me that’s for sure… So as an extra safety measure, and last warning, here is the obligatory “take me to the kittens” link… although I have to confess, they’re not strictly kittens per-se…. No libel actions over that one either please… :)

So I have the opportunity to try out some night portraiture shooting for a very good friend of mine…. She’s agreed to let me experiment on her…. lol… (some people just never learn)…. ;)

Anyways… Before I experiment on her, I decided that maybe I should have a play around with myself first…. Oooooh…. Ummmmm…. Maybe I should re-phrase that…. Conduct some “personal research”… That sounds MUCH better… :)

So here ya go… You HAVE been warned…. It’s not too late to run away…

I know the single off camera speedlight probably isn’t ideal, but at the moment it’s all I have, so will have to do…. Hopefully at some point I might be able to acquire some candles… and if nothing else, at least the smoke will obscure my ugly mug… :)

Sorry… lol… But sometimes you just HAVE to make someone else suffer…. Consider yourself lucky, I have to look at me every day… ;)

A Load of Old Rubbish..

Yup, that’s pretty much what sums up this shot the best…. Just a load of old rubbish, in a ditch… Can’t really add much more than that, only that I’m surprised there weren’t more shopping trolleys in there… or ANY come to think of it….

Volcanic Sunset

Following on from the unfortunate Icelandic volcanic eruption today, which has brought the whole of British airspace to a complete halt owing to the cloud of volcanic ash covering most of Northern Europe, we were at least promised quite a dramatic sunset…. and I have to say that it didn’t disappoint…

I have to confess to having a tiny bit of a thing for sunsets… just in case no one had actually noticed that small fact…. especially as you don’t have to get up early in the morning to catch them…

Top Of The World

Well ok, maybe not “quite” the top of the world, but I guess it’s deceptively higher than this picture makes it seem…. It’s still most likely a good 150 feet down to the bottom…. and the brave soul standing on the brink would be my daughter…

It’s not anywhere near as dangerous as it might first appear though, as I made sure that she told me where all her pocket money and sweets were hidden before I asked her to pose, so had she slipped I’d not have had to risk life and limb entering her bedroom blind…. You have to have priorities when taking these sorts of shots…. ;)
