The camera never lies… Or does it !?!?…

It’s Been A While

So, It’s Been A While… (love this song btw, go give it a listen if it’s not familiar to you)… Anyway, as I was saying, it’s been a while since I put anything on here for various reasons… It’s also been a while since anyone tendered any care and attention on this particular building, which is such a shame as it’s a great building… but getting VERY dangerous…

So a brief catch up with me… Started a new job end of Sept.. reverting back to a previous career of mine, and I have to say it’s going great… I’ve also had a number of urbex outings too recently, one of which this shot comes from, so apologies to those of you who prefer my more tranquil landscape’y type posts (and flowers !!), but I do find a certain beauty in these places too… Plus it’s one heck of a challenge to find and capture something appealing, and also quite the challenge to get out without having fallen through the floor… Oh, and getting in can be quite interesting too sometimes.. ;)

  1. What an amazing building! And it does look dangerous. Hope your tetanus shots are up to date. Good news about the new job! Congratulations on finding something you enjoy.

    • It was VERY dangerous in places Avital… Much more so than on previous visits… The upper floors were particularly lacking in the required level of support, and there was evidence-a-plenty where people had partially fallen through… Thanks Avital..

  2. It HAS been a while! I was just thinking about you, wondering when we will see something new here on your blog… guess it worked! ;-)
Glad to hear the new job is going well.
The photo is great, I love the tones. How close is that to the sooc image?
I’m not one of *those*, who prefer the landscapes/flowers, I like variety :-)

    • It has indeed… lol… Thanks Michaela… As for the original, ooooh I dunno… Does an artist normally show his initial sketchings ??… lol… Oh ok then, if you insist… You have to remember though that this image is an HDR, which will always add a certain amount of unseen detail to the final image, and I have to confess to also “tweaking” this particular shot further in photoshop, as I was after creating a certain finish… So here’s the SOOC Image, just for you… :)

      October 17, 2011 at 6:15 pm

      • The sooc looks pretty good, but I love how you tweaked it to end up with the final image.
It’s amazing how different an image can look from the original. Makes me want to keep the boring ones until I can see how/if I can improve them.

        • It’s a good plan, as I quite often go back tom images previously dismissed… once I’ve realised there’s something extra I can to do make them work… :)

  3. Yikes…a tetanus shot IS a good idea!! :D

Looks like a great bit of exploration there B. I like these images as well (your urbex). Just love the idea of seeing something hidden from view. Been chased out of any locations lately?! LOL ;)

    October 17, 2011 at 12:49 pm

    • It certainly was a great place G, and even better that the basement was accessible this time around too, cos everyone loves a basement.. right ??… As for the last bit, ummmm… Might have been chased by a slightly irate farmer on his tractor… lol…

  4. Great photograph! I especially like the lighting.

    October 17, 2011 at 8:20 pm

    • Thanks so much… It was definitely worth the effort..

  5. I love that song too. Did you know that the band members of Staind are from my neck of the woods (western Massachusetts)?
I checked out the SOOC too – quite remarkable what you can do with processing when you know what you are doing, as you obviously do. I think we need a mini-slug falling through a floor shot now that you’ve put the idea in our heads, LOL.
Glad to see you posting again!

    October 17, 2011 at 8:45 pm

    • Did not know that… I just knew they were from over the other side of the pond… It’s all so tiny over there when you see it from so far away.. ;)
Anyways, thanks Karen.. I do like to tinker.. As for the mini slug, well it’s a thought.. lol..

  6. Seriously? Stop it! You make me want to put my camera up for adoption so it can find a more worthy Mommy.
This is gorgeous. The textures that you squeeze out of every photo are simply amazing. When I look at it large, it’s like I could step in and feel it.

    October 17, 2011 at 8:53 pm

    • Hahaha… Yeah, sorry about that… You get plenty of your own amazing shots though, they’re just of different places / things that’s all… Thanks KD.. :)

  7. Chloe [Photographer]

i love urbex photos and this one is a pleaser
    it looks incredible

    ps congrats on the job

    October 17, 2011 at 11:22 pm

    • Thanks so much Chloe… It’s not just the photography I love either, it’s the finding these places, and the not knowing what’s in the next room…

      October 18, 2011 at 7:50 am

  8. It’s a great shot, I love your urbex stuff. I don’t think I’d have the courage to go in there myself – I prefer buildings where I don’t think the floor is going to collapse on me! Good luck with the new job.

    October 18, 2011 at 11:39 am

    • Lol… Yeah it can be a bit disconcerting when you feel the floor suddenly turn to sponge in front of you… It sure makes you look carefully at where you’re treading.. Thanks JP…

I’m a total scardy cat when it’s comes to this urbexy stuff. I always love your urbex shots though, so keep scouting and finding these great places. But, man, beware of that floor! Eeeeeek…. I hope you didn’t visit here in your high heels ;) hehe. REally awesome shot Funky. Great processing as always.

    • aswirly

Oh, and I love that song!

      October 18, 2011 at 5:17 pm

    • Oh I very much intend to keep scouting… and I bet I could get you to go urbexing, if it wasn’t such a long drive… lol… And hey, you promised not to mention my shoes… ;)
      Thanks so much A… :)

  10. Congratulations on the new job, Brian!
Thank you for the song to go with the photo. Works well with that and be careful when you go to grab us fantastic visions like this. The colors work well, here, and I can imagine the ghosts clinging to the surroundings.

    October 18, 2011 at 8:59 pm

    • Thanks so much Leslie.. and you can rest assured I’ll be sure to take care too, as I do kinda like my limbs and stuff all in one piece.. and in the right place… lol.. ;)

      October 18, 2011 at 11:10 pm

  11. This kind of place fascinates me, partly because the discoveries that we can do there are treasures for photographers like us and, secondly, I can’t understand why these areas are abandoned like that. It’s a shame and a mystery that nobody can explain…

I really like how your picture turn out, Brian. She has a feeling of mystery and sadness. And above all, it gives us the taste of exploring abandoned houses. ;)

    October 19, 2011 at 12:42 pm

    • Places like this certainly are fascinating, with all the history they hold, and the mystery too, and the excitement of not knowing what the next corridor / room holds in store.. It sure is such a shame though that these buildings are just left to ruin… Thanks Anne..

      October 19, 2011 at 8:02 pm

  12. Congrats on the new job and glad to hear it is going well! Now that you’ve settled in, I’m sure things are getting better and better every day.

Your shots of this place are really starting to show the decay. Very sad to watch. I so wish someone could ‘save’ this structure and return it to its previous glory.

    October 19, 2011 at 4:24 pm

    • Thanks Tracy, let’s hope things do get even better… even if they are also getting busier.. lol.. but I don’t mind busy all the time I’m achieving something… As for this place, well it’s one of many we’ve found recently, but it has deteriorated considerably from the first time we were there, which wasn’t that long ago… I hear it’s a listed building, which means it can’t be demolished, but let’s hope something is done before it falls down of its own accord..

      October 19, 2011 at 7:59 pm

  13. Nice shot! And good luck with the new job!

    October 19, 2011 at 4:25 pm

  14. Jayne

Lovely to see both the original and the ‘topped-and-tailed’ shot. I love seeing these buildings, in a state of faded glory. I remember looking around a couple of building projects with my entrepeneur/developer father when I was teensy weensy and there was a tinge of excitement at what once was and thoughts of people long gone. Sadly, such projects are now as rare as hens teeth here. :/

I’m so pleased to hear about the new job. I don’t know, I just kind of got the impression that the last job wasn’t filling you with the joys of spring (I’m either freakishly empathic or horribly wrong). Hopefully this will fit the bill just fine.

    October 19, 2011 at 7:44 pm

    • I’d go with freakishly empathic… lol… Had to quit before I killed someone… ;)
This job is (currently) definitely more rewarding than the last, and I have no regrets at quitting and switching careers again… and it’s real close to home which is always a bonus… Thanks Jayne… Glad you like the shot, and it is such a shame you no longer have the opportunity to explore such places as an adult, as the excitement is most definitely still there..

      October 19, 2011 at 7:56 pm

  15. I think your shots make the building look as beautiful as any landscape or flower. Congrats on the new job. I hope it continues to be rewarding for you. :)

    October 25, 2011 at 2:01 am

    • Thanks so much Robin… That’s one of the biggest challenges, and probably why I enjoy this subject matter so much… Plus, what “boy” doesn’t like exploring… ;)

      October 28, 2011 at 7:33 pm

  16. So you visited our bedroom and took a sneaky snap :-) I reckon that room must have been very dark even with the light coming through the window. You captured it so well. I hope your previous job was a as photographer- would be such a waste of talent. Watch the floorboards as you leave please.

    October 28, 2011 at 8:27 pm

    • Lol… Thanks so much Keith… If only I was making a living from photography; wouldn’t that be nice… :)

      November 6, 2011 at 5:34 pm

  17. So happy to hear that things are going well, F.S…
that’s great news!!! I hope that everything just continues to get better!
AND a hard rocking song (and image)! I’ve always been a big fan of Staind… and your images, of course!
    :)

    November 7, 2011 at 7:05 am

    • Thanks so much SIG… 6 weeks in and it’s still looking to be a pretty decent job I have to say, and I’m not going to argue with that… Can’t beat a bit of Staind either eh… :)

      November 7, 2011 at 11:09 pm

  18. What an incredible place! and you have captured it so very well, as per usual.

Sorry I haven’t been in touch for a while, promise to catch up on your blog. Congratulations on your job btw. :)
